JIL AFRICA POLICIES AND STANDARDS

Last Updated: 17-September-2026

We are committed to responsible journalism, accuracy, transparency, editorial independence and respect for the people and communities represented in our coverage.

As a digital news and information platform, we cover social, political, economic, technological, business, entrepreneurship, investment, lifestyle, trade, globalization, poverty, environmental, health and other matters of public interest.

These Policies and Standards guide our approach to researching, preparing, publishing and correcting content.

1. ACCURACY

We seek to publish information that is accurate, relevant and responsibly presented.

Our editorial contributors are encouraged to:

– Verify significant factual claims;
– Consult credible sources;
– Attribute information appropriately;
– Distinguish facts from opinions;
– Avoid presenting speculation as established fact; and
– Correct significant factual errors when identified.

2. VERIFICATION

We seek to verify important information before publication.

Information involving serious allegations, public officials, businesses, organizations or individuals should receive appropriate scrutiny.

Where information cannot reasonably be independently verified, we seek to identify its source and present it appropriately.

3. SOURCES

Our sources may include:

– Government institutions;
– Official documents;
– Public records;
– Academic institutions;
– Research organizations;
– International organizations;
– Businesses and organizations;
– Interviews;
– Expert sources;
– Public statements;
– News agencies; and
– Other credible sources.

Where appropriate, we identify the source of information and distinguish between verified facts and claims made by individuals or organizations.

4. ORIGINALITY AND EDITORIAL VALUE

We aim to publish content that provides meaningful information, context, reporting, analysis or other editorial value.

We do not intend to operate simply as a platform for copying and republishing material from other websites without adding meaningful value.

Where external information is used, we seek to provide appropriate attribution, context, analysis or original reporting.

5. EDITORIAL INDEPENDENCE

We seek to maintain editorial independence.

Editorial decisions should be guided by journalistic considerations and public interest rather than improper external influence.

Advertising, sponsorship or commercial relationships should not automatically determine editorial conclusions.

6. POLITICAL COVERAGE

We report on:

– Elections;
– Political parties;
– Governments;
– Public officials;
– Public policy;
– Legislation;
– Governance;
– Political developments; and
– Other matters of public affairs.

When covering political issues, we seek to distinguish between:

– Verified facts;
– Statements by political actors;
– Analysis;
– Commentary;
– Allegations; and
– Disputed claims.

Contested claims should, where appropriate, be attributed to the individuals or organizations making them.

7. HEADLINES

Headlines should accurately reflect the substance of an article.

We seek to avoid deliberately misleading headlines, fabricated claims or sensational presentation designed solely to generate clicks.

8. CORRECTIONS

We recognize the importance of correcting significant factual errors.

When a significant error is identified, we may:

– Correct the relevant information;
– Update the article;
– Add an editorial correction note where appropriate; or
– Remove material where necessary.

The method of correction will depend on the nature and significance of the error.

9. RIGHT OF REPLY

Where appropriate, individuals or organizations that are the subject of significant allegations may be given a reasonable opportunity to respond.

Where a response is received, we may include it in the relevant article or publish an appropriate update.

10. SENSITIVE SUBJECTS

We may report on sensitive matters including:

– Poverty;
– Conflict;
– Crime;
– Human rights;
– Politics;
– Health;
– Gender;
– Children;
– Displacement;
– Disasters;
– Environmental issues; and
– Other issues involving vulnerable communities.

We seek to report such subjects responsibly and avoid unnecessary sensationalism, stereotyping or dehumanizing portrayals.

11. HEALTH REPORTING

Health-related content should be presented as informational material rather than individualized medical advice.

Where appropriate, we seek to use credible sources and qualified experts.

Readers should consult qualified healthcare professionals regarding individual medical decisions.

12. FINANCIAL AND INVESTMENT REPORTING

Business, investment and financial information can change rapidly.

We seek to identify relevant sources and distinguish reporting from opinion, commentary and forecasts.

We do not provide individualized financial or investment advice through our editorial content.

13. IMAGES, VIDEO AND COPYRIGHT

We respect intellectual property rights.

We seek to publish images, photographs, videos, graphics and other media that we have created, licensed, obtained with permission or are otherwise legally permitted to use.

Where appropriate, we provide attribution to the relevant creator or source.

14. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

We may use artificial intelligence and other digital tools in certain research, production, editing, design or administrative processes.

Where AI-assisted tools are used in producing content, appropriate human oversight should remain responsible for published material.

AI-generated information should not be assumed to be accurate without verification.

Important facts, statistics, quotations and claims should be checked before publication.

15. USER-GENERATED CONTENT

Where comments, submissions or reader contributions are enabled, users remain responsible for the material they submit.

We may moderate, edit or remove content that violates our standards, these policies or applicable law.

16. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST

Individuals involved in editorial work should disclose relevant conflicts of interest where such conflicts could reasonably affect the credibility or independence of published material.

17. SPONSORED AND COMMERCIAL CONTENT

Sponsored content, advertising and other commercial material should be distinguishable from independent editorial content.

Commercial relationships do not automatically represent the editorial position of our publication.

18. ANONYMOUS SOURCES

Anonymous sources may sometimes be necessary where disclosure of a source’s identity could expose the source to harm, retaliation or other serious consequences.

Where anonymous sources are used, we seek to assess the reliability of the information and, where possible, corroborate significant claims independently.

19. PRIVACY AND PERSONAL INFORMATION

We respect the privacy of our readers, contributors, sources and other individuals.

Information about how personal information is collected and used is provided in our Privacy Policy.

20. CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE PERSONS

Extra care should be taken when reporting on children and vulnerable individuals.

We seek to avoid unnecessary identification or disclosure of personal information where doing so could create unnecessary harm.

21. EDITORIAL COMPLAINTS

If you believe an article contains a significant factual error or raises a legitimate editorial concern, you may contact us.

Please provide:

– The article title;
– Article URL;
– The specific concern;
– Supporting information or evidence where available; and
– Your contact details.

We will review legitimate complaints and respond where appropriate.

22. ADVERTISING AND EDITORIAL SEPARATION

Advertising supports digital publishing but should remain distinguishable from independent editorial content.

The presence of an advertisement does not determine our editorial position.

23. COMMITMENT TO CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

We recognize that journalism and digital publishing continue to evolve.

We periodically review our editorial practices and standards with the aim of improving accuracy, transparency, accountability and the quality of information provided to our readers.
